Family – The Foundation of His Musical Journey
Art Garfunkel Jr. is part of a family where music and art have always played a central role. His parents – the legendary singer Art Garfunkel and the versatile artist Kathryn Garfunkel – sparked his passion for the stage early on and laid the foundation for his own artistic path.
Below you’ll find the most important family members at a glance:
Born into greatness, touched by song – the musical journey of an exceptional artist
Art Garfunkel Jr. wasn't just born into a musical family – he was born into a legend. As the son of world-famous singer Art Garfunkel and renowned artist Kathryn Garfunkel, it was only a matter of time before music found its way into his life. At just 16 months old, he made his stage debut – almost innocently – in Osaka, Japan. Wrapped in kimonos, his proud parents presented him to the audience: a toddler in their arms who would later spend many years in the spotlight. It was the beginning of a special family tradition.
Art Jr. spent much of his childhood touring with his father – on stages in the USA and around the world. Despite his young age, he regularly sang background vocals, but also frequently took on solo parts and captivated audiences with his natural stage presence.
As a four-year-old, Art Jr. received his father's mixtapes as gifts – featuring oldies, Everly Brothers songs, and doo-wop classics. He was also lovingly introduced to the Great American Songbook. He listened to these songs over and over again – until he not only knew them, but loved them.
"When I was four, my dad gave me his favorite mixtapes, featuring oldies like Everly Brothers tunes and songs from the doo-wop era," says Art Jr. "He also gave me Great American Songbook mixtapes. And just like him, I listened to those tapes over and over again. I ended up loving those songs just as much as he did. As a kid, I sang some of those songs on his show. I always did two or three duets with my dad, sometimes more."
Between Languages and Cultures – A New Home
In the 1990s, the Garfunkel family regularly toured Europe – sometimes on stage, sometimes on family vacations. The roots of his grandparents, who once emigrated to the USA from Eastern Europe, certainly contributed to Art Jr.'s development of a special relationship with Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The language, the people, the culture – all of this fascinated him and struck deep roots in his heart.
In 2006, not yet 17 years old, he finally moved to Germany. After attending the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City, where he learned German, Art Garfunkel Jr. settled in Berlin. Supported by relatives and with the blessing of his parents, he began his very own musical journey. Since then, in addition to music, he has also studied other foreign languages – including Russian.
Art Garfunkel Jr. shares a special artistic affinity with the Eurasian cultural area, especially those countries that once belonged to the Soviet Union. The deeply rooted musical tradition there, the emotional openness of the audience and the cultural expressiveness of these regions have profoundly enriched his artistic work.
A Bridge Builder Between Languages
Art Jr. is a celebrated singer whose music touches people far beyond language and national borders. He has built a loyal and enthusiastic fan base throughout the German-speaking world, as well as in regions with a Soviet past. Whether in vibrant cities or small communities, his authenticity, emotional expressiveness, and deep connection to languages resonate everywhere.
"My fans—whether in Central or Eastern Europe—are grateful that I open the door to all this beloved music for them, with lyrics they can understand and feel. I play the music people want to hear—and it's exactly the music I perform with passion myself," says Art Jr.
A special moment in his career: In August 2023, he performed at the legendary City Winery nightclub in New York City. Acclaimed musician Paul Shaffer, former bandleader of the Late Show with David Letterman, was deeply moved:
"Art Garfunkel Jr. captivated the room. He took the anthems of my generation—the Simon & Garfunkel repertoire—and gave them new depth and meaning. With youthful passion, he revived them. Presto! They were relevant again!"
Albums with Heart, Voice, and Tradition
In October 2021, Art Garfunkel Jr.'s debut album, Wie du – Hommage an meinen Vater (In Loving Memory – Homage to My Father), was released. It features duets with his father as well as renowned German artists such as Marianne Rosenberg, René Kollo, Frank Schöbel, and others.
An expanded edition with remixes, new duets, and additional songs followed in 2022.
His second studio album, Evergreen, was released in 2023. It features Art Jr.'s well-known songs from the 1960s – arranged in a modern style and also performed bilingually in German and English. This stylistic blend is a unique selling point in the Schlager genre. His style preserves the tradition of the genre, but modernizes it without losing the essence of the originals.
A milestone: "Father and Son" (November 2024)
The first joint album by Art Garfunkel Jr. and his father, "Father and Son," will be released in November 2024.
A deeply personal work that reflects not only their musical connection, but also the emotional depth of their relationship. The selected tracks bridge generations and musical styles and make one thing clear:
Father and son are connected by more than blood – it is through music that they speak, feel, and live.
"We are not just father and son – we also share the same love of music and the desire to use it to express our emotions, thoughts, and perspectives on life."
Conclusion
Art Garfunkel Jr. represents a unique blend of cultures, generations, and languages. He carries his father's musical legacy within him – yet forges his own unique path. With voice, heart, and a clear vision.
